Recently, I had the privilege of documenting Sonny’s newborn photos and his first weeks at home with his loving family. I have never felt so welcomed into a family’s real life at home with kids and I loved how it all just happened naturally.

Despite the normal disarray of having a toddler under two and a newborn with sleep issues, Sonny’s family welcomed me into their home generously.

Embracing the realness

The house was a true reflection of a lived-in home, complete with the occasional bark of their dog, who preferred to be indoors, a toddler eager to explore, and a dad juggling important work calls between joining us for newborn photos. Regardless of the challenges, Sonny’s home was filled with love and patience, the key to surviving those first few months with a new baby.

Planning ahead for newborn photos is ideal, but it’s never too late to inquire about availability. Shooting at home offers comfort to the whole family. Toddlers feel at ease showing off their favorite toys, and there truly is no pressure to have every corner of your house pristine – just make sure areas like your nursery are clutter-free.

I’ve learned to expect the unexpected – babies may need extra feeds, toddlers may be shy, and that’s perfectly okay!
